About
Cholesterol is an essential molecule that plays several critical roles in the body, despite often being associated with disease. It is a structural component of cell membranes, helping maintain their stability and fluidity. This is especially important in the brain and nervous system, where cholesterol supports proper signaling between neurons.
Cholesterol is also a building block for vital substances, including steroid hormones (such as estrogen, testosterone, cortisol, and aldosterone), vitamin D, and bile acids. Bile acids are necessary for digesting and absorbing dietary fats and fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K), making cholesterol central to normal metabolism and nutrition.
